Communication ~ Duties vs Skills

One of the most difficult aspects of writing a resume is sorting the duties from the skills. Duties are the basie functions of an activity and skills are the tools used to accomplish those functions. Let’s say for instance your duty as an office clerical worker is to assist with the receptionist duties. Skills in this category might be: answer multi-line phones; communicate clearly; friendly and outgoing when greeting the public; customer service with a smile; data entry; appointment scheduling or computer appointment system, etc.

My husband is a Cryogenic Service Technician for a worldwide company and his biggest duty is to provide service so he must have great customer service skills, be able to work a computer to generate reports, use tools and equipment by utilizing manual dexterity, and many more skills.

Remember again that skills come in 3 types…

  • Job Content
  • Transferable
  • Behavioral

A Career Coach can assist you in sorting out duties and skills so you make that great first impression.

You can throw any combination of those into the mix as long as it is relevant. We will talk about relevance soon.
